Some 2000 NVA troops and 1500 US Marines fought in a bloody face to to combat in order to take the three stratigic high grounds overlooking Khe Sanh combat base. The battle lasted for over three and a half week ( 24 April - 11 May 1967 ) with the US Marines taking the hills, and later on, they occupied these hill outposts during the siege of Khe Sanh in early 1968. The Marines suffered 155 killed and 425 wounded while the NVA losses were 920.

The hills are located about 5 km north-west of Khe Sanh combat base, 80 km from Dong Ha, and 150km nortwest of Hue. The recommended base for this tour is Dong Ha city. The hike for 3 hills takes about 3 hours on trails and through thick elephant grasses. The best time for this tour is from March to September.
