Firebase Birmingham Vietnam tour
Firebase Birmingham was established in early March 1968 by the 1nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division overlooking Route 547 to support Operation Jeb Stuart. During 1969-1970 Birmingham was used to support the 101st Airborne's search and destroy operations in the A Shau Valley - Operation Apache Snow in 1969 and Operation Texas Star in 1970.
In the 1972 East Offensive the base was overrun by the North Vietnamese Army, but later recaptured by the ARVN. On 16 March 1968, one of the worst friendly fire inciddents of the US in Vietnam War took place at FB Birmingham when a Marine F-4s dropped three 500lb ( 230kg ) bombs on Birmingham hilltop killing 16 and wounding 40 men from 1/327 Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.Today the base is turned over to farmland and housing. A military cemetery for the NVA and VC soldiers is sitting on the base, the trace of paved runway still can be seen on the base site and the hilltop is accessible by foot. We can also combine with the visits to Firebase Bastogne and Checkmate. Birmingham is located about 25 km south-west of Hue. We should use Hue city as the base for this tour.
