Firebase Veghel ( Now )
Firebase Veghel is located on Route 547, halfway between Hue city and the A Shau Valley. The base was named after the Dutch town of Veghel, one of the drop zones during the World War II operation Market Garden, which was captured by the 501st Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division in September 1944. On 16 April 1968, the 1st Battalion, 327 Infantry Regiment began an assault on two hills about 40 km southwest of Hue on Route 547 in preparation for Operation Delaware The hills were finally captured on 19 April and the firebase was established there. Veghel had 3 artillery batteries: 105, 155 and 175, making it one of the largest firebases in the A Shau Valley.

Exploring firebase Veghel
Firebase Veghel was abandoned and reopened at several times between 1968 and 1971. It was reopened in March 1969 to support Operation Massachusetts Striker and again in February 1971 to support Operation Dewey Canyon 2. The base was overrun by the NVA in April 1972 during East Offensive, but later recaptured by the ARVN in late 1972.

On top of Veghel today

Today Veghel is turned over to farmland, but trenches and bunkers still can be seen on the hill. There are some rugged dirt path leading up to the hilltop. The hike takes about half an hour each way ( from the parking to the hilltop ). We can also combine with the brief visits to firebase Birmingham and Firebase Bastogne.
Veghel is located about 40 km south-west of Hue. We should use Hue city as the base for this tour.
